The Right Tools

All new motorcycles should come with a basic tool kit. There are some other tools you may want to add to make working easier.
Note: you may not be able to add these to your motorcycles tool kit - but add them to what you have at home.

Metric vs. SAE - Most motorcycles will be metric in measurement, with the exception of American made motorcycles. Choose your tools accordingly. Sine the majority of motorcycles are metric, these are the dimensions that will be dealt with unless noted.

Note: you will notice that I am replicating what is already in your bike tool kit. Basically I would replace these with better quality tools.

Basic Kit

  • Philips screwdriver
  • Blade screwdriver
  • Crescent wrench - 6" and/or 10"
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Standard pliers
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Open or combo open/close end wrenches - basic sizes: 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm
  • Allen Keys - basic sizes: 4, 5, 6mm

Note: It is good to have at least 2ea. - 8, 10, 12 & 14mm wrenches.

Additional Kit

In addition to the basics you can add additional sizes in the tools mentioned above. Your motorcycle will probably have one or more nuts or bolts at larger sizes. Axle & steering nuts can be 22+ mm in size. There may also be some larger allen screws, in the 8 - 10mm range. It is not a bad idea to go over your vehicle and then purchase special sizes for the application.

 

  • Philips screwdriver - stubby & extended shank
  • Blade screwdriver - stubby & extended shank
  • Socket wrench (standard 3/8 drive) - in basic and additional sizes.
  • T-handle allen keys (Optional)
  • Extender magnet (or magnetic screw driver)
  • Small flashlight of some kind
  • Torque wrench (with appropriate sockets)
  • Oil filter wrench (Socket usually fits 3/8 drive)
  • Stand (swingarm or center stand)
  • Cable Luber (see Review)
  • Grunge Brush (to clean chain)
  • Spanner (for shock adjustment - if not included in your bike kit)

Basic tool kits can be purchase at most hardware stores for around $100. Or you can buy individual tools as you need them.
